The foundation maintains a two-part grantmaking focus to fund programs that address fundamental causes of societal problems, rather than programs that seek to remedy the effects of those problems. Through its Early Childhood Development Focus Area, the foundation funds programs that help mothers, fathers and caregivers of children (prenatal to age 3) to better cope with the stresses in their lives that might result in depression. Under the Ecosystem Restoration Grants, the foundation focuses on protecting, restoring and revitalizing high priority watershed ecosystems in CA and OR. Within these watersheds, the priorities are promoting the sustainable management of forest and agricultural land, revitalizing streams, and restoring riparian areas, with the goal of enhancing and maintaining self-sustaining watershed ecosystems.
